Revamping SIA Design System

Product

Singapore Airlines

Role

Sole Product Designer

Timeline

What I did

User Research, Component Design

Context

In SIA, each product team had their own individual design systems (DS).

Problem 😐

Teams without a dedicated product lacked a unified DS. Disjointed design libraries caused inconsistent components across SIA applications.

So... what did I do?

Interviewed internal designers to understand fragmentation causes & promote a unified DS. Revamped DS with new components and clearer documentation to drive consistency.

Internal designers need

  • Unclear about when and where to use each component

  • Navigating multiple pages to find component details was time-consuming

  • Most frequently used components are all the way at the bottom

Our team goals

  • Greater usage of SIA Design System across all teams

Revamp Opportunity

After interviewing designers and referencing competitor design systems, I reviewed and revamped the existing SIA Design System to promote its usage across all SIA designers

Component Organisation

Grouped related components on a single page to reduce friction and make browsing more efficient

Table of Contents

Users can view new component updates via the changelog and navigate directly through a structured table of contents

Component Growth with Documentation

Designed 18 new components and documented clear guidelines on when and how to use them

Takeaways

Change takes time

For product teams to swap from individual product DS to a unified one, it will be a long and tedious process

Future plans

Recommend to conduct training for new designers on usage of unified DS to increase outreach and usage, referencing Google & Lyft
